The application requires one of two serial-bluetooth adapters shown below. The adapter sits between the ECU and the iOS device, connecting to the ECU via the serial cable in the same way other diagnostics software does and enables the iOS device to communicate with the ECU over Bluetooth (BLE).

 

Please note that no adapter other than those listed here are supported at this stage, other adapters may work, however this is unlikely since device specific support is generally required in the application. Support for other adapters may come later, but this isn't a priority right now.

BLE232 4.2 Adapter

This adapter is a straightforward serial to bluetooth converter which provides no additional functionality. I can supply these configured and tested along with the necessary male-male gender changer. Each adapter comes with a USB power lead.

All the small switches should be on the right (off/0) and the DTE/DCE switch to the left (DTE position).

Powering the adapter

You may power the adapter through a USB cable plugged into a cigarette lighter adapter or USB battery pack. Alternatively, for a more permanent solution, you may use the switched live feed from the car's stereo so that the adapter isn't powered while the ignition is off.
